Shopping for Your First Machine

I’M BUYING MY FIRST SEWING MACHINE – HOW DO I CHOOSE ONE??

Your first sewing machine can be one of the most thrilling purchases you’ll ever make! It may also seem like one of the most daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are some valuable tips that will help simplify the process and take the stress away.

First of all, consider your BUDGET. Even the higher priced brands make budget-friendly models for beginning sewers. Although some higher priced machines typically offer more features and greater durability, you can always trade up when your sewing skills increase.

What FEATURES are most important to you? Although most machines today are computerized there are many that aren’t which will reduce the cost. Do you plan to sew garments and want those perfect automatic buttonholes or hem stitch? Love decorative stitches? Automatic needle threaders are a great option. Compare the basic feet and accessories included with each brand. Whatever area of sewing you’re passionate about there’s a machine that offers it.

SPACE REQUIREMENTS. Consider what space you have available for your sewing machine and your sewing area.

Assess the FREQUENCY OF USE of your new machine. How often and how intensively will you be using your new machine?

Think about your future CREATVE GOALS. If you enjoy machine embroidery or quilting, you may want to seek machines with these capabilities or that have the option of future expansion.

Most importantly, think about whether introductory sessions or classes on your new machine, as well as ongoing service and maintenance, are important to you. Most local dealers offer at least a basic class included with the purchase of your new machine and some offer more in-depth classes. A reputable dealer will also have servicing available. Online purchases are sometimes tempting because of lower prices and some vendors, like Amazon, will even allow returns but you are on your own from there. You may want to consider building a relationship with whomever you choose to purchase from. Routine maintenance with them may ensure a longer life and greater trade-in value when you’re ready to move up to your dream machine!

Here are some brands to consider and compare: Bernina, Bernette, Brother, Janome, Pfaff, Necchi, Husqvarna/Viking, Singer and others. Visit dealers and test drive different models, read reviews and most of all, have fun!
